The Dean Hedstrom Research Fund at UCSF
The Dean Hedstrom Research Fund at UCSF was established to support the melanoma research of Dr. Adil Daud, Director of Melanoma Clinical Research at UCSF. His clinical trial program aims to develop novel therapies for melanoma. One of his focuses is to better understand the molecular basis of melanoma. Along with other researchers, Dr. Daud and Dr. Wintroub work tirelessly to find a cure.
As Dr. Daud stated:
"An area that I am personally interested in is developing gene therapy for melanoma. I have shown along with Dr Richard Heller and many collaborators that inserting a gene for IL-12 into melanoma tumors can stimulate the immune system to get rid of the melanoma. We have shown that it is safe and well tolerated in humans.
We are now planning a larger trial in 50 patients with melanoma to determine how effective this is.
We are working with the Dean Hedstrom Foundation to produce the gene therapy DNA and conduct the trial.
We hope, if successful, this will offer a non-toxic alternative to chemotherapy for patients with melanoma who have advanced disease."
