DHFMA Activities and Resources for Kids

When Dean first found out he had melanoma, he learned that skin cancer is not caused from activities he did out in the sun a day ago, a week ago, a month ago or even a year ago. He learned it is something you get after a long time, from many years, of improper protection from the sun. With this new learned information he turned to his wife Kris, and said "... we need to educate the children. We need to spread the word and create melanoma awareness."

Dean's favorite saying was "never give in, never give up and never lose." Dean did not give in, did not give up and did not lose ... time just ran out. In his honor and memory The Dean Hedstrom Foundation for Melanoma Awareness was created to raise awareness and raise money for research.

It is our wish that you find this section and the collection of resources on sun protection awareness for children to be useful. We hope it will teach you the importance of how to correctly protect yourself from the sun, what to look for if something looks "funny" or "not right" on your or on someone else's skin. We ask that you help us spread the word. If more people know how to correctly protect themselves from the sun, then hopefully less people will get skin cancer that can turn into melanoma and more lives are saved from this disease.

If you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to contact us at info@dhfma.org.

DHFMA Hello Sunshine Coloring Book

A DHFMA exclusive, the Hello Sunshine It's Me Your Friend, Skin! is a sun safe for a healthier tomorrow™ guide. It was designed by Jordan for her 2010-2011 Community Service Project for school. She would like to thank the Dean Hedstrom Foundation For Melanoma Awareness for allowing her to post this guide on their website. This gives her the opportunity to spread the word to children of all ages on how to better protect themselves from the sun and prevent skin cancer that can possibly turn into melanoma.
